Supporting Bilingual Dialogue on the World Stage

In May 2018, Congress Australia supported the first-ever outdoor simultaneous interpretation event in Australia. A joint press conference between Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and French President Emmanuel Macron was held at Kirribilli House overlooking Sydney Harbour.

The conference was an important forum for discussing topical political issues, including developing closer ties between Australia and France, targeting cyber warfare, and future submarine deals between the two nations.

  • 102x Integrus Receivers allowing delegates to access real-time French and English interpretation with crystal-clear audio.

Production Challenges & Technical Innovations

Outdoor Location

The event's location posed a challenge for the interpretation equipment, as the conference was held on the sloped lawn in front of the heritage-listed Kirribilli House. To ensure the interpreters had a direct line of sight, and to provide a stable, flat surface for the interpreter booth, the Congress Australia team built the booth on the veranda out the front of Kirribilli House. This positioned the interpreters at a higher vantage point and ensured they would not be blocked by any press members.

Providing Reliable Broadcast Feeds for Media

The press conference was streamed live across various Australian and French media outlets, where consistent, interference-free language feeds were essential. Before the conference began, the team briefed the media on how to use the Bosch interpretation headsets and ensured they had clear audio feeds from both the French and English channels for their broadcasts.

Clear Multilingual Communication for Global Media

The joint press conference at Kirribilli House was conducted seamlessly, marking a milestone in Australia’s capacity to support simultaneous outdoor interpretation for high-profile government events. Despite the technical complexities of an open-air waterfront setting, Congress Australia successfully provided clear, uninterrupted French and English interpretation feeds for attending media, officials, and international broadcasters.
