BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN BABY BOOMERS AND GENERATION Z USING THE WIRELESS CONFERENCE MICROPHONES
Inter-generational Learning (IL) encourages meaningful mutual learning between different age groups, promoting "a greater understanding and respect between generations" (Beth Johnson Foundation, 2019). The Thompson Home in Terrey Hills (NSW), hosted an IL activity for their senior citizens, by connecting them with primary school students. The theme of this activity was Australian History, where students asked the elderly about their experiences at school and their home environment.
The setup consisted of our Bosch Wireless Dicentis microphones, which were set to voice-activated mode and interfaced into a Skype call. The microphones allowed the residents to sit back and talk casually, while the students on the other end of the call could hear each speaker clearly.
The residents reminisced about the old days and played the music of their time to the students. As you can imagine, the main difference between these two generations is the use of technology. Using the Conference Microphones allowed the residents to experience some of the latest technology firsthand while efficiently communicating with those who use technology daily.
IL provides a meaningful connection and mental stimulation, which can reduce the feeling of isolation and prevent the likelihood of depression. According to Australia's Welfare 2015 article, over half (52%) of permanent aged care residents display symptoms of depression. It was clear from all the laughter that the interaction was a positive one and lots of fun. On the other hand, the students were able to learn about Australian History from the source while increasing their communication skills.
Using an online communication platform with a Conference Microphone system breaks down geographical barriers while making the conversation easy between groups. Inter-generational Learning aims to challenge the various social issues between generations, and this proved it can be done, with a memorable experience for all involved.
