Delivering Secure Multilingual Interpretation for ICANN’s Global Virtual Policy Forum

ICANN68, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) Virtual Policy Forum, was held over four days in June 2020, bringing together participants from around the world to discuss internet governance and domain name policy.

Due to global travel restrictions, the event was delivered entirely online using Zoom. ICANN required a secure, reliable remote interpretation solution to support multilingual communication among participants joining from different regions and time zones. Congress Australia was engaged to provide a Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) platform enabling interpreters, speakers, and delegates to participate seamlessly in a secure virtual environment.

Ensuring Reliable Multilingual Communication Online

Managing Multilingual Interpretation Across Virtual Sessions

ICANN68 required six language channels across multiple virtual meeting rooms, with interpreters located in different parts of the world. Maintaining stable audio feeds while coordinating interpreters across multiple regions and time zones presented a significant operational challenge. In response, Congress Australia configured the platform to manage multiple interpretation channels simultaneously while providing moderators to oversee each language stream. If an interpreter experienced connectivity issues, backup interpreters could immediately take over without disrupting the session.

Maintaining Reliable Interpretation in a Fully Remote Environment

Delivering simultaneous interpretation in a fully virtual environment presented challenges, as interpreters and speakers relied on remote internet connections and personal equipment, increasing the risk of audio issues or disruptions during live policy discussions.

Delivering simultaneous interpretation remotely introduced challenges, as interpreters and speakers relied on varying internet connections and home-based equipment, increasing the risk of audio instability during live policy discussions. To ensure reliability, Congress Australia implemented comprehensive interpreter training, pre-session technical checks, continuous monitoring, dedicated interpreter support channels, and full system redundancy.

Successful Delivery of a Fully Virtual Multilingual Event

ICANN68 was successfully delivered as a fully virtual global policy forum, enabling participants worldwide to engage in multilingual discussions without technical barriers. The event demonstrated Congress Australia’s capability to deliver secure, scalable Remote Simultaneous Interpretation solutions for complex international conferences and policy forums.
